Closed for MLK Day

All JDL locations will be closed on Monday, January 17 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Art and Voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This event honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful voice while highlight the role that art can play in social transformation. Patrons are invited to create a piece of art in any medium inspired by one of the prompts from Dr. King’s sermons and speeches, and send a photo of their piece to community@myjdl.com.

Submissions dates are December 15 to January 1. The piece selected as the winner will be on display and all entries will be featured on JDL’s Facebook page.

Lift Every Voice – A Celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Students from Parkside Middle School, Jackson High School and Jackson College, along with local musician Larry Sumner Jr., capture the life and legacy of Dr. King through his works.

This program will debut at 6 PM Monday, Jan. 18 on our Facebook page and YouTube Channel and will be available until Feb. 1.

An excerpt of this performance will also be shown as a part of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce 2021 MLK Diversity Celebration on January 15. To learn more about this event and how to watch, click here

 

Jackson District Library was one of 49 institutions in the United States to receive the Lift Every Voice grant, which is administered by the Library of America, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
