Redistricting in Michigan: The MICRC & Communities of Interest

The League of Women Voters of Jackson Area is holding a townhall event to educate voters on the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) process in drawing new legislative and congressional maps. MICRC was created as a result of Michigan adopting proposal 18-2 in 2018.

Discussions will include redistricting in Michigan, the commission, and opportunities for the public including communities of interest to provide input to the commission before it draws the maps.

The virtual townhall will take place via Zoom, and registration is required. To register, click here.

Participating in this townhall gives you the chance to have your voice heard at the MICRC public hearing on May 11 at the Commonwealth Center at 6 PM.

World Music Day Celebration

The Jackson District Library and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra are virtually celebrating World Music Day (Fete de la Musique) on June 21 at 6 PM.

An evening performance by Ara Topouzian Trio will bring the rhythmic sounds and stories of the Middle East to Jackson! Topouzian is a nationally recognized Armenian American, who mesmerizes audiences with the unique sound of the kanun, a 76-stringed Middle Eastern laptop harp.

You can watch this event live on Zoom or JDL’s Facebook page. To join on Zoom, click here. A recording will be also available afterwards until July 5 on JDL’s Facebook page.

This project is funded in part by Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Trails & Tails

JDL is excited to partner with the Dahlem Center to present Trails & Tails as a part of the Summer Reading Program! The program will run July 14-31.

Stop by any JDL branch beginning July 14 to pick up a Nature Explorer kit. Each kit includes a Passport to different stops along the trails at the Dahlem Center. As you and your family explore, you’ll mark the Passport at each stop and learn about different “tails” that you might see on the trails.

Bring your completed Passport to a JDL location to be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
